Boring Thursday

I'm bored to death. I've got lots to do but I feel so unmotivated. I can't wait for tomorrow. Tomorrow I'll start Power90 again.

Anyways, I did this henna sometime last month. How did I do it? Suffice to say yoga helped *grins*. It's amusing how the ability to contort your body in various, almost-impossible poses could impress people. Seriously, it's good to be flexible.

Have I mentioned that I'm bored to pieces today? Oh yeah, I did ....

On the bright side, I got to know her :). Check out her blog, she's one cool chick.

*Brick-a-bracka*

*Rah RAH RAH!*

Heh, Adam reminded me of that silly cheer by Bugs and I've been hearing it in my head all day.

Thanks baby ....

Little bags of pot-pourri

I made party favours for Amir's party on Sunday. Cute little bags of pot-pourri (rose petals). I'm not sure if the "marhaban" boys fancied them ... but I sure do!

Little tulle bags, pot-pourri, pretty little paper flowers and ribbons from Spotlight.

Sweet smelling rose petals in a bag ....

A Tale of a Chocolate Cheesecake ... and a proposal *eeeks!*

We threw a thanksgiving party for Amir on Sunday. We are thankful for his safe delivery, thankful that everything has been smooth sailing for him and his mama, thankful that his circumcision healed beautifully .... well, we are just thankful to Allah for the blessings He has bestowed upon our family.

Amir is such a sweet little baby. He's full of grins and giggles and smiles for his gramma, aunt and uncle!

Amir has dimples!

I baked a chocolate cheesecake for the party. It was a success (I happen to score well with cheesecakes for some reason). This is the first time that I made a chocolate cheesecake though and my bro-in-law (BIL) got a little confused.

BIL: Where's the cheesecake? I thought you're making one ...

J: It's in the fridge ... you saw me decorating it this morning ... with the pink icing ...

BIL: (opens the fridge) Ohh ..... THAT'S your cheesecake?

J: Duh yeah! Doesn't it look like a cheesecake to you?

BIL: Ummm ... no, looks like a chocolate cake ...

J: Duh yeah, it's a CHOCOLATE cheesecake ...

BIL: .... ohhhh ....

Ok ok .... granted it looked a little ugly .... and maybe I could've used a better looking icing (pink looked "wrong" and tacky) ... but put it in your mouth and you thought you died and went to cheesecake heaven .... heh heh ... I'm good with cheesecakes .... *smirk* ...

Anyways, it was a nice party. I met and mingled with my cousins (and they loved my cheesecake). Flirted with babies (I love kids!). Oh, I get to cuddle 2 angelic sweethearts, Noreen and Aliyah, daughters of a cousin. They are so friendly, smart and cute!

Aliyah & Noreen ... cutie sweethearts ...

The party would've ended on a good note (for me) if not for another cousin of mine who arrived to the party late.

She had a mission .... a marriage proposal for me. She asked if I had a boyfriend. I told her firmly that I've been happily attached to a gorgeous man for the past 3 years and yes, I want to marry him.

But she pressed on.

"Please consider it" she said

"I'm afraid there's nothing for me to consider" I replied

"Is this friend of yours husband material?" she queried

"Oh, absolutely! Without a doubt" I affirmed

"It's the dear wish of your uncle, your late father's brother, for you to marry that cousin of yours" she persisted

"He's like a brother to me. I can't imagine being married to him" I insisted

"Besides, I'm in love with another man and will marry him" I added

At that point, mama called me over ('cos she knows what was going on and decided to save me. I love my mama!). The discussion ended there.

*sigh*

I guess this is what I have to endure until I'm finally married. Until that time, I could just insist that I have a boyfriend, and he's husband material and I'm all set and good.

Or I could just say .... Fark off and just leave me alone ....

Here's the chocolate cheesecake ... with ugly pink icing .... enjoy ...

Cheesecake for your soul ...

Icing henna

I made cheesecake today. Plain Chocolate Cheesecake. Yes I know it's "sin" food. But I happen to make sinfully delish cheesecakes ...

*sigh*

Workout: Thanks to Amir's party tomorrow, torrential early morning rain, and TOM's extended stay I'm not getting my regular workouts. *psssst* ... yes those are excuses ..... yes I oughta walk into busy traffic ... yes I should put my head down a toilet bowl ....

*sigh*

Eating: Bad, bad, bad ....

I've been a bad girl ....

'nuff said ...

On the bright side, I had a wickedly clever idea. Got some pink decorating icing for the cheesecake and well, one thing leads to another ....

Pink henna!

Once TOM decides to leave, I'll get back into the swing of things.

Power 90 - Week 3

I overslept again this morning so I missed today's sculpt session ... no worries, will do it tonight. Bro will be at work and mom would be asleep. The only living creature around would be Princess Grumps who'd be staring nonchalantly as I sweat and grunt and flex my muscles. *flex*

Princess Grumps sitting elegantly on her royal pillow

Today is the start of the third week of Power 90. I'm doing well so far, Alhamdulillah. I've only missed one cardio session. But I made it up with that excruciatingly painful hardcore step aerobics session on Tuesday (thanks Fiona for almost killing us).

The only reason I'm over-sleeping is 'cos TOM is here for a visit so I need not do subuh. *sigh*

I've not discussed my eating habits here. I will soon. Need to keep myself accountable. I've not been eating well. I don't think I'll be doing Atkins again though. I might look into the South Beach Diet. We'll see. Adam has a good advice though .... eat moderately. He's right and he has a sexy body. Ooh la laaa .... that's my bunny-fluff!

I'll try to keep up with my workouts. I've got a very busy weekend ahead. Will try to update.

McCafe & Henna

What do you get when one henna freak meets another???

Henna of course! On the working hand to be exact (right for both in this case).

So I met my pardner in henna and we had a nice dinner at McCafe (that girl CAN eat!) and did quickie 5 minute hand jobs on each other's right hand (think clean, people! hyuk hyuk!).

It was a pleasant evening. Great company, nice food, wonderful henna .... and a good movie to complete the evening ;).

Food! And this is just for Red .... haha! Kidding!

I, Robot ... Oui Henna

I received a pair of tickets to catch the premiere screening of I, Robot today (well, technically yesterday, July 20). I asked her to join me. It was fun seeing her again. We stuffed our faces at McCafe, chatted and hennaed!

I wanted to scan the invite ('cos it's pretty) and post it here but my scanner has gone kaput and I'm too tired to see what's up.

I thought the film was fairly good 'cos the Fresh Prince is in it (and he's funny). I love the NS-5 robots, they are so beautifully made (in my job, I've seen prototypes of robots built by students and I'm kinda mesmerised by the mechanisms ... and well, I'm just an engineering person to start with). The only problem I have with this movie is that they try to humanise machines and it's just ... ummm .... out of this world. In any case, I won't post anymore spoilers. Go see it if you're a big fan of Will Smith. You'll get to see some rather tantalising shots of him ... believe me, I'm BUTT serious (hyuk hyuk).

Oh, one last thing for now .... I dig Sonny .... he's so endearing!

Will talk about the dinner and henna later ..... sleepy!

Onward MARCH!

This morning, my lovely mama woke me up at 6:15am for my morning workout (I think the whole neighbourhood heard her! Heh heh!). I LOVE my mama!!

So I rolled off the bed, washed my face, changed into my cool workout gear, spread out my yoga mat (cardio has power yoga) and said a cheery "Good MORNING!" to everyone. I feel alert and strong today despite turning in late last night. Cardio went well. I sweat like a burst dam.

I strapped on 3 lbs weights on my ankles for the kicking segment and 2 lbs weights on my wrists for punching. Intensity is everything, baby! I skipped abs 'cos I did that yesterday. You gotta let your muscles recover. Intensity is everything but fatigue is BAD BAD BAD.

Tomorrow morning I'll do sculpt and at lunchtime (at work) I'll have step aerobics. The fiesty, pint-sized instructress tortures us to bits. I tell you, nothing gets more hardcore than her step sessions!

New update:
I've decided to post very embarassing details of my statistics here to keep myself accountable *sigh*. I won't say how much I weigh now 'cos it's horrifying. No I'm not in denial. No I'm not trying to whistle and pretend that it's all a bad dream. I won't 'cos this is my blog and I can do whatever I like .... BWAHAHAHA! However I'll divulge how much weight I would *HAVE* to lose (which, if anyone cared to see, is ALOT), to arrive to my *ideal* weight based on BMI calculations. Seriously though, I don't care about weight loss 'cos it doesn't measure loss of fats, so I'll concentrate on losing the inches. I'll measure myself tonight. I'd like to know my bodyfat% too, so I'll figure that out as well.

Well, that's it. My links are better organised and I have more of them now and my blog looks prettier thanks to this lovely lady's hennaed hands ;). BTW, check out her blog and her beautiful smiling boy.

Jewel SMASH!

If I posted this about 1.5 hours ago, it would still be Sunday ... and I'd prefer that, 'cos this is Sunday news ...

But why was it delayed?

'Cos I got busy re-decorating my blog, that's why ...

*sigh*

Thing is, I've got to categorise my links. And now I've arranged everything neatly: henna, fitness and my newfound fellow bloggers (YAY, I love visitors!).

Now I feel better.

I'm so anal-retentive about being organised ....

Anyways, on the fitness front, I didn't get to do cardio and abs as planned on Saturday 'cos by the time I got up, I had to get ready for work. Nope, this is not an excuse to get out of working out 'cos I'm dead serious about losing this flab and getting fitter. So Saturday came and went. And I over-indulged with the gorgeous thick rich Swiss chocolate (see "U fond of fondue?" below). Before going to bed, I was VERY determined to do both workouts (ie. cardio and sculpt) on Sunday morning.

Sunday morning: Sleepy eyes opened at 10:30am
*GASP* .... I slept in and I'm not supposed to do that! GRRRRRR .... I hate it when my well thought out plans disintegrate right before my eyes! I *HAVE* to work out in the morning, like REALLY early. If it's after 8am, I'm screwed. Don't ask why but my body agrees to work out ONLY around 6:30 - 7am.

*sigh*

All is lost I thought. But no, opportunity presented itself sometime in the early evening. Mama went for dinner with her qigong friends and bro left for work. With nobody to fight over the TV with, I stuck the Power90 DVD in and worked out!!! My body was screeching protests but I pushed on. I won't let anything stop me baby, no way jose.

YAY!!!! Alhamdulillah! I DID get my workout afterall. And I feel great!!

I did sculpt 'cos it's Sunday but I threw in the abs exercise too. I figured that since I'm going to do an hour of hardcore step aerobics at work on Tuesday, that should make up for the lost Saturday cardio session.

In any case, I'm glad I get to sweat it out this weekend. At least now I don't feel too guilty about stuffing my face in that pot of chocolate sauce. Hee!

Enjoy!

The drummer boys

Right after a few hours of food over-indulgence, I met my mama for a short shopping trip. I'm a cheap girl, I buy undergarments on sale ..... hmmm .... I buy *anything* on sale .... I thrive on sales .... I LOVE sales ...

Anyways, upon arriving at Centrepoint, I caught sight of a group of boys, men, dudes, males clad in all-white and each of them attached to a drum of some kind. Hey, I've seen those guys, dudes, men, etc etc before! What are they called?? Aura whacamacallit? Wicked Aura or something? ....

Anyhoo, I love their groove. Those guys are cool. Dreadlocked, bushy, bald, mullet. And their clothes are usually colour coded. Oooops, I forgot! I think there's one chick nestled within all that testosterone.

I've seen their performance and enjoyed it tremendously 'cos I love the drums. Makes me wanna shake my bon-bon, baby!

I think today they were engaged to do a promotion for the tea brand Dilmah (everyone's wearing a tee with the word Dilmah printed on it .... duh!). Oooohhh, they also had 2 green blingbling bikini-clad and swashing skirted dancers! Now, that's new. But I think it's got something to do with Dilmah.

Anyways, they started their performance and I was jiving to their beat when I turned around expecting mama's scowl of disapproval only to see her jiving too. Jaw dropped. Mama!! What in the name of heaven got into you??? She admitted that she likes the sound of those dudes. Now, ain't that cool or what? I love my mama!

I managed a quick shot of them using my trusty N6230. Ignore the cabbage heads in front of me, they wouldn't move to let me take a photo ... GRRRR! The performers are in white holding the drums .... you know what a drum look like, right?

Cool dudes, cool performance!

U fond of fondue?

My boss had a terrific idea ....

B: Let's do something fun! Let's get all our 300+ staff do stuff together .... on a Saturday!

Errr, yeah boss, you just got voted for the The Most Tactful Boss Award. Why Saturday, you cruel, cruel man???

Promptly ignoring our whinings by going temporarily deaf, the genius announced "Since we have people of different nationalities on the payroll, let's get to know each other's culture better. Shall we have a multi-cultural celebration, everyone??".

Can we say no? No.

So today, 300+ staff gathered together, after a whole morning of boring, continuously droning annual meeting, to enjoy each other's culture. There were food from Myanmar, Japan, China, India, Algeria, Turkey, Pakistan, Vietnam, Malaysia (Malay food-lah!), USA, Switzerland ... wow, are we *THAT* multi-cultural?? Amazing.

There was a fashion parade of some sort, cheongsams, sarees, kurta, baju kurung, etc etc. On display were games played in different parts of the world and costumes worn by people of different cultures: Korean hanbok, Japanese kimono, dresses of the Karen tribe in Myanmar, sarees, shalwar kameez, cheongsam etc etc. There was a live demonstration on making Chinese dumplings, sushis and Indian chappatis. An ang-moh (Caucasian, for the uninitiated) man played Indonesian songs (he's married to a Malay lady) ..... on a saxophone, no less.

The craziest thing on the programme? Line dancing to a Thai song. Line dancing. To a *THAI* song.

Heh. Nothing beats that for originality AND the funniest cacophony of a performance.

All in all, it was quite fun (thanks boss, you just won the Boss With The Cleverest Idea Of All Time Award for your .... ummm .... clever idea). I think most people enjoyed themselves thoroughly (who wouldn't when there's free food to eat??). I had couscous and tabouleh for the first time. That's Algerian and Turkish respectively. The rest of the food was good too and I think I over-indulged (hey, haven't we heard that before??! Sheesh!).

The best thing on the menu? Personally, it beats everything else hands down, no competition ....

Can we say F-O-N-D-U-E, ladies and gentlemen??

A pot of gorgeous bubbling thick rich Swiss chocolate sauce *drooling as I type* ..... trays of strawberries, cream puffs, brownies ....

For a long time I was rooted to the spot directly in front of the pot ....

I had a chocolate moustache (and beard) all afternoon ....

Delightfully sinful!!!!

*sigh*

I think I over-indulged ....

*runs around, arms flailing, looking for P90*

*BUUUUURRRRPPP!* ....... out!

Friday's are N-I-C-E!!!

I can't believe I didn't make any entry yesterday. I wanted to! I really do! *sheepish grin*

Anyhoo, today I start my second week of Power 90. I'm doing well so far, Alhamdulillah, despite PMS, water retention (I've been looking like a freaking water buffalo these past 2 weeks) and psychotic mood swings. I get up at 6:15 for subuh, change into my cool exercise gear and just work out. The feeling afterwards is exhilarating. WHOOOOO! I'm HIGH on endorphins BABY!

I realised that I've not *announced* my workout routine (heh). It's simple. 6 days a week. 3 days cardio alternating with 3 days sculpt (weight training). I start the routine with sculpt and this time round I start on Friday. My rest day is Thursday. Why Friday, you ask ... Why not start on Monday, you ponder ... why do you always do crazy things like sniff your food before you eat it, you enquire ....

I've got a good reason for that and .....

I don't have to divulge it ... heh!

So today I did 30 mins of weight training. I've only got a pair of 2 kg dumb bells (yes, sissy I know, I'm getting more this weekend, k?).

P90 starts with warm-ups (those are VERY important, everyone). Then we get down and dirty with pushups, followed by a series of weight training, working on various muscle groups (are you asleep yet?). Wheeeee, this is fun! I get to talk about anything I want and get away with it!

I think I'm improving quite a bit with the pushups (girly ones though). The 2 kg weights are getting too easy for me (darnit, I need heavier weights!). I always do 15 reps of every exercise and I don't succumb to failure (for the weight-training-idiots, "lifting till failure" means doing as many reps as you can until you can't lift anymore). Anyhoo .... I can feel my muscles getting more defined (YAY!!!). Physically I feel alot stronger too. Alhamdulillah ...

Today I went a step further. At lunchtime, I went to the gym at work with my room mates S & W. I cycled for 20 mins (set on Interval training) and did inclined sit-ups (15, YAY!). I don't want to push myself too hard. Afterall, tomorrow I'd be doing cardio and abs with Tony. Cardio with Tony is another thing altogether. The workouts are so ridiculously simple, even an 80 year old can do it. But how hard you want to work it depends on the intensity. Simply said, no pain no gain, baby.

Well .... I'll talk more about cardio tomorrow .... Wheeee, we're having some fun!

Mistress J ... out!

A week of Power 90

OK, this is how it goes. Power 90 is a 90 days fitness bootcamp led by fitness guru Tony Horton. You follow a 6 day week program, alternating between cardio (Sweat) and weight training (Sculpt). You get one rest day. There are 2 levels, 1-2 and 3-4. Obviously level 3-4 is the more intensive version of level 1-2. Most people move up to level 3-4 after about a month with 1-2. But some people may even jump right into 3-4.

It all depends on one's fitness level.

I personally started with 1-2 'cos I want to first get used to the workouts and sequences (both levels have the same sequences and routines except that 3-4 has additional bonus workouts). At the same time, I don't wish to totally kill myself and put me off training. Injury & Fatigue=BAD. Take it easy, build up your strength and stamina, listen to your body and you'll last longer.

I love this program 'cos the whole routine lasts a mere 30 mins. That's it, folks. 30 mins a day, 6 days a week. Just half an hour out of your whole 24 hours to keep fit. Not too much to ask eh? No more excuses, fellow fitness seekers. Get off that fat ass and start working it. No more complaining ... no more whining ... I don't want to hear any more bitching about your elephant thighs .... put that bag of chips down .... yes, turn around and walk away quickly from that candy bar ... while you're up, why don't you drop down and give me 20 pushups??

Ahhhh, let's talk about pushups. All this time, I thought it was a guy thing ... y'know what I mean? Like shaving your face and trimming nostril hair .... and ... you get the picture. I thought if I do pushups, my boobs would shrink into mere grapes and my chest would turn into that hard and broad tabletop shape that men work so hard for. Oh boy, was I so very wrong. Pushups are one of the best all-rounder exercise around. But .... you gotta do it right. If you do, you'd be working on alot of muscle groups ...

1) Upper body: forearms, triceps, shoulders, pecs
2) Torso: abs, obliques, lower back

Now ... that's what I call killing many birds with one stone. Heh ... I'm all for it.

As of today, I could do around 45 - 50 reps of a variation of pushups (in the 30 mins workout) ... normal, fly (wide armed) and triceps (close armed). Sadly, I still do them on my knees (girly style). But I'm working on it ... I'll get to the toes pushups soon!

If anyone is interested in doing pushups the right way, this site is a good read. Mistress Krista will show you the way. Ohh, while you're there, read up on her weight training pages. You'll learn things you never knew before.

Mistress Jewel ... out! .... for a moment ....

will be back ... uhhh ... for updates ...

out!

Power on, girlfriend! YEAH! .... hmmm ...

Last Friday I started the Power 90 fitness program again (Power 90 is one helluva kickass fitness bootcamp). I've decided that I've become too rotund for my own good. My Sunday birthday lunch with mom and bro proved that I still have a huge weakness for carbs and I'm an unmistakably shameless glutton (I had a plate of crayfish pasta (lots of lovely noodles), part of the breadbowl creamy mushroom soup (I devoured most of the breadbowl), more than 1/4 of the pita bread pizza (BBQ chicken), a free Firehouse birthday bowl of ice cream (free 'cos it's MY BIRTHDAY!) and on top of that, ordered a sinful big glass of Swensen's famous Coit Tower ice cream and a TALL (and I mean TALL) glass of Chocolate Freckled something-something ice cream which has got to be one of the best things on that menu!).

.... whew! ....

The ice cream was shared between the 3 of us but still ....

... I'm a glutton ... *hangs head in shame* ...

And the price I've got to pay is a REALLY round and thick middle, fat hips and elephant thighs ....

.... WAAAAAAAAAH!!!! I'm fat! .... I'm fat 'cos I'm greedy! ....

*sniff*

But well, as Adam would say, if you don't like it, change it.

And change it I will!

So here I go .... Powering on another round of the wonderful Power 90.

Oh Allah, please give me the strength and patience to get through this feat! Amiin!

I'll be back daily to give updates on my progress.

I know I'm gonna rock this thing!

YEAH! Go ME!

Of sushis, an ice cream cake and a "burp" day ....

ze zeliciously zinful ize cream cake!

So .... one turns 31 only once huh? ...

Geez ... am I THAT old? ...

In anticipation of this day, I've been on an on-again, off-again depressive state ...

... or maybe, it's just PMS ...

I'd like to talk about how I feel about passing the 30 year mark .... but I'll save it for another day.

Yesterday I went to the beach with my cousins and their families. Kids went cycling, dads took care of them, moms (and me) lounged around on mats, ate and gossiped. It was a nice day. I casually mentioned of a little celebration later in the evening. It's our family's practice to gather around (with wonderful eats!), say some prayers of thanks and just ... ummm .... eat and be merry! I invited them to join us and I'm happy that they accepted (maybe the mention of sushis helped with their decision .. heh!). So from the initial party of 3 (me, mom and bro), it turned into a party of .... umm ... 16.

Everyone loved the sushis of course, but the 8 kids grew excited when my bro took out the magnificent triple layered ice cream cake from Swensen's. Of course I gotta get them to work before they get some honey .... so off they went, singing perhaps one of the loudest "Happy Birthday" song in history. And kids being kids, they went for a second round and this time totally pulverised the song.

Happy BURP-DAY to YOU! ... *BURP* ...

Happy BURP-DAY to YOU! ... *BRAWK* ...

.... you get the picture ...

Lots of giggles (gee, they're so proud of their ingenuity!) later, everyone settled down in front of the TV (and watched a bootleg copy of a new movie that I won't mention here for fear of prosecution) with a slice of the delicious cake.

... so, I guess turning 31 wasn't bad at all ...

... AND ...

... even though I didn't get any of the ice cream cake, I have a deliciously sinful chocolate cake, totally free, compliments of M1 .... all to myself!

.... just wish Adam is here to share it with me ...

*sigh*

Happy Burp-day to ME!

July 2
Felt light-headed all morning .... lookie, little blue birds and twinkling stars!! how purty!

... what gives??? ...

went to the doctor and was diagnosed with low blood pressure .... huh?? .... since when???

Doctor's orders: Consume more salt, chips, fries, preserved plums, EVERYTHING salty! Will raise blood pressure .... duh, yeah! and my cholesterol and weight too!

Went to see Amir .... what a cutiepoose! *coooo* .... me happy!

July 4

Spent the afternoon at sis' place. Played with Amir. That boy releases some potently nasty flatulence! Everyone clear the room! The fart maestro is in da house! *shudders* ....

The sweetie (and smarty pants) Nina visited Amir with her parents and gramma ... what a cutie! That girl can get away with murder ...

July 7

Took the day off work (YAY!!!). Kak K came by to trim and henna my hair. Aye, henna is good for your hair, everyone. Makes it soft and silky. Now I can do that swishing action thing with my hair (see Prince Charming in Shrek 2) ... woohoo!
